Zetech University has been awarded Platinum Certification in Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP), becoming the first university in Kenya and the second institution in Africa to receive the top-tier rating.
The certification was conferred by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) during the University’s 7th Research and Innovation Week held at the varsity’s Technology Park in Mang’u.
GFGP, a financial and grant management standard sponsored by the African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC), evaluates institutions on criteria such as financial controls, procurement processes, risk management, and governance. Platinum is the highest of four certification levels.
The Vice Chancellor of Zetech University, Prof Njenga Munene, said the certification affirms the university’s systems for managing research funding and its readiness to engage in global partnerships.
“This certification is more than just a badge it reflects our commitment to accountability and positions us for global research partnerships,” said Prof Munene.
Dr Catherine Kyobutungi, Executive Director of APHRC, acknowledged the achievement, noting that the certification strengthens the university’s capacity to handle international research grants.
“Congratulations on being the first university in Kenya to achieve Platinum certification in Good Financial Grant Practice. This recognition enhances your ability to manage research grants and build international partnerships,” she stated.
Chancellor Prof Susan Alfano Nkinyangi highlighted the importance of applied research during the event, calling for research that addresses real-world challenges and supports collaboration with industry.
