The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and CAB International (CABI) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance collaboration in agricultural science, food security, and sustainable development across Africa. The agreement marks a significant step in fostering scientific excellence and innovation that supports Africa’s agricultural transformation and resilience.
The partnership provides a strategic framework for joint efforts to strengthen agricultural research, promote environmental sustainability, and support the growth of the agricultural industry. . It also reinforces both organisations’ commitment to supporting the goals of the China–Africa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (CAASTIA) — a platform initiated by the African Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS). to advance science-driven cooperation between Africa and China for sustainable agricultural growth.
Under the MoU, AAS and CABI will collaborate in several priority areas, including:
Speaking at the signing ceremony, AAS Executive Director, Professor Jane Catherine Ngila said, “This partnership embodies our shared vision to harness science and innovation for Africa’s sustainable development. By joining forces with CABI, we are creating a collaborative platform that connects research, policy, and practice to build a more food-secure and resilient continent.”
This collaboration highlights the central role of science and innovation in achieving Agenda 2063 — Africa’s blueprint for inclusive growth and sustainable development. It also demonstrates the commitment of both institutions to empowering African researchers and advancing evidence-based approaches that address the continent’s most pressing agricultural challenges.
Through this partnership, AAS and CABI will jointly design and implement initiatives that promote knowledge exchange, scientific excellence, and innovation ecosystems capable of driving agricultural transformation at scale.
The MoU underscores a shared belief that by investing in Africa’s scientific capacity and fostering international cooperation, the continent can unlock new opportunities for prosperity, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
